We originally were looking into LED bulbs, but quickly realized a few things- while they are "cool"- emitting little to no heat from them (which was an original concern of ours), they are 1) extremely expensive and 2) they emit a "blue-ish" glow/hue to the lighting that they project. Neither of these things seemed appealing to us, which steered us into the direction of the CFLs. They are a truly economical option that emits a warm glow that is not harsh or glaring in any way. These bulbs are 60 watt bulbs and they work very well to light our office space. (We have 3 lamps in the space that have all been outfitted with these 60 watt CFL bulbs). The light is not blue-hued or glaring. It is super easy to work by and casts a truly warm glow (without heat coming off the bulbs.) We have had no problems with the bulbs and look forward to getting lots of mileage out of this pack of eight bulbs!
Overall, we are really pleased with this pack of bulbs. They are the most pocket-friendly, earth-friendly option that we were able to find. We look forward to using them for a long time!
* COLOR: These bulbs take a minute or so to warm up. They start off dim and gradually get lighter over a few minutes time. They are definitely brighter than the old 60W bulbs and I like the fact that they don't have that yellow glow either. However, they are not daylight bright or a stark flourescent tube bright like you would find in an office fixture either. I find they have just the right amount of light for most of the rooms in my home. I do use brighter lights in my bathroom though.
* SAVINGS: On average, I have found that these lights last about a year in the main rooms of our home, and about a year and a half in the bedrooms and other rooms where lights are on less frequently. For the price-point, these lights are good lights and I have noticed that my power bill has gone down since switching over from the standard 60 watt bulbs to these.
I was hesitant to purchase lightbulbs online and wondered how many would survive the trip. In this case, seven out of eight lived to see daylight, not too bad as far as statistics go. Even though there are newer models of this same light by G.E., I continue to use these for there value and reliability. If you have any questions leave them in the comments and I will be happy to answer them.
- Good - It sure saved me a lot on electricity costs - around $10 the past month by just replacing all the 60-watt incandescent bulbs that came with my apartment.
- Good - This bulb is cheap and durable.
- Bad - This bulb itself takes a long time to warm up. This means it does not have the advertised 60-watt brightness when it's turned on. It takes more than 20 minutes for it to come anywhere close. When I used it in a windowless bathroom, I slipped on a rug because I couldn't see it in such dim and slippery area. It still hasn't gotten really bright even when I'm done with showering. This problem also made it not a good idea on desk (work) lamps. By the time it's good for reading/writing, I could have already finished the job.
- And one SAFETY Precaution: If using this in bathroom, never, NEVER put it in an enclosed lighting fixture. (i.e. don't cover it.) Moisture builds up when you take a shower and it scared me off when I heard it sparkling in the lights. Worked fine without the cover, but I figured this won't provide adequate lighting in bathrooms anyways so switched it out.
Generally I would use this light bulb ONLY for places where the brightness is not a big concern or when lights are kept on for hours in a row, like in my living room, dining area, or bedroom lamp.
At time of posting, these are less than $9, so I think it is a heck of a good way to replace all the power-hungry incandescent bulbs in the house, or at least get a good start. The form factor of these is small-ish, and actually smaller overall than the incandescent bulbs I replaced (about 4.75" from top to bottom, including base, and about 1.5" at the widest point).
I just ordered a second package of these bulbs because they are so good. I ordered the first package a year ago, which contained no duds, and none of the bulbs have burned out, buzzed, or otherwise ceased to work. Again this year, no duds in the new package. I will certainly be ordering a third pack if I ever have a need to do so.
