I really like the quality of the light coming from these bulbs. It's a nice bright yellow color that illuminates everything very well, but it is not overwhelming in any way. The bulbs work equally well in fixtures with either clear glass or frosted glass. Just what I was looking for to stock all the enclosed fixtures in my home. Electric bill be damned!
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022
I almost deducted a star simply because these are a smidge on the blue side but they are not bad. I have 100 watt equivelent bulbs from another manufacturer that have the same specs except for wattage but are a better tone however can't be used in enclosed fixtures like these can.
I was at the point that I was desperate to see & stop the eye strain & was wanting to just remove the globes/covers from all the ceiling fixtures so I could use daylight LED bulbs. But after finding these, I can have my cake (fixtures) & eat it (see) too!
*If* I can find another brand rated for enclose fixtures, I'll probably try out the other brand next time to see if the hue of the light is more like the open-fixture-only daylight LEDs I got for bathroom & closet use. But I would buy these again if I needed to, though we did the entire house so, if they last as long as indicated, it will be a VERY long time before we need new bulbs.
These bulbs significantly improved my life. A MUST for shift workers who are awake at night & have enclosed fixtures.
APPLICATIONS
The seller uses a crafty play on words in the product description: "PERFECT FIT - Use in table lamps, floor lamps, sconces and ceiling fixtures." Yes, they “fit”—but these bulbs, despite equivalent lumen output, are not particularly suited for some of these applications, although some folks may find them good enough for their uses. When I replaced a spiral 13 watt CFL (equivalent watts/similar lumens) in a table lamp with one of these 9 watt LED bulbs, the illumination on the table was significantly less. Most of the light was focused upwards. We also replaced a CFL with this LED in a pendant light, and found it to be irritatingly bright.
LED bulbs are classified as either General Purpose (GP) or Omnidirectional, which describe their light dispersal characteristics. (These bulbs are GP.) Incandescent and CFLs disperse/emit illumination in all directions and along most of their entire length. By contrast, the lower half of this A19 or “classic” bulb is covered up by a heat sink and although emitting similar lumens overall, watt-equivalent LED bulbs by their nature emit directional lighting towards, and concentrated over a smaller surface area at, the end of the bulb. In effect, LED bulbs shaped like classic bulbs possess characteristics similar to reflective/flood light bulbs, and are more suited to directional task lighting such as pendants. What this means is that these bulbs provide less illumination outward and even less downwards (or backwards), and they are not (as indicated in the product description) particularly well suited for table lamps, sconces, vanity lights with the bulbs facing upwards, or similar applications where outward and especially downward lighting is important or preferable. I asked Amazon to look at this claim, which I feel is misleading.
Another, similarly-priced brand for sale on Amazon, which looks almost identical to the TCP bulbs, tout their bulbs as "omnidirectional," which is supposed to mimic the illumination patterns of incandescent bulbs and CFLs. However, one observant reviewer indicates these bulbs also fall short in downward illumination. So it appears misleading or false claims may not be uncommon for LED bulbs.
You can pay a lot more for legitimate “omnidirectional” bulbs, or step up to higher wattage, cheap LED bulbs to help compensate, but of course they use more energy, are typically a bit more expensive, and will be MUCH brighter. This may be of benefit for those who like their table lamps to highlight the attributes of their ceiling. The LED market is presently focused on 60 and 100 watt-equivalent bulbs, with few 75 watt-equivalent bulbs available, which are generally sold as single units and are much more expensive. I have some 100 watt-equivalent LED bulbs, and they are extremely brighter than the 60 watt-equivalents, and for us simply do not work where we prefer 60 watt-equivalent illumination.
Be aware also that even though these LED bulbs are more suited to directional task lighting such as pendants, they may not be suitable for all of these applications either. Because the light emissions are concentrated over a smaller surface area at the top of the bulb, this area is extremely bright, and some may find it to be irritating or even blinding if the end of the bulb is exposed or viewable, which was our experience. We went back to using a CFL in our pendant over the kitchen sink because of this problem. Although the glass shade extended a bit beyond the end of the LED bulb, it did not extend far enough to sufficiently block the bulb end when we were near it. This is not a problem in our downward-pointing bathroom vanity lights, where the longer shades adequately extend beyond the end of the bulbs. For reference, These TCP bulbs are about 3 and 1/4 inches long, not counting the screw-in base.
COLOR/COLOR RENDERING
I tested three of these bulbs side-by-side in our 6-light bathroom vanity next to three CFLs with the same specified 2700K color (and lumens). The watt-equivalent LED bulbs were noticeably brighter and “whiter” than the CFLs (after fully warmed up). In other words, the CFL lighting was noticeably warmer/softer than that of the LEDs, although they both specify 2700K. I'm guessing the actual color of these LEDs is 3000K or higher.
Furthermore, the color of the walls and objects in the room were somewhat diminished in comparison with the CFLs. Some LED bulb descriptions include the Color Rendering Index or “CRI” in the product description or specifications. This bulb does not. The higher the CRI, the better the color rendering. Generally, the CRI should at least be above 80. But based on the apparent misleading claims I’ve found so far for LED bulbs, I would be at least skeptical of any number provided, especially for the cheaper bulbs and unfamiliar brand names.
LONGEVITY
LEDs are not supposed to burn out as quickly as incandescent or CFL bulbs (unless of poor design, workmanship, or damage during shipment—a few reviewers have indicated nonworking TCP bulbs). LED bulbs do, however, experience “Lumen Depreciation” over time, where the amount of light produced decreases, and light color appearance can shift. For poor quality bulbs, this can occur within its first year or two of use, even though the bulbs may continue to “work” for many years. (All of the reviews for this particular bulb are less than a year old, and the large majority seem to have been posted shortly after purchase.)
ENERGY STAR CERTIFICATION
There is an “Energy Star” certified version of this bulb, which is substantially more expensive. Since this particular bulb is not Energy Star certified, I wonder what these bulbs are lacking in comparison to their Energy Star counterpart. According to the government’s Energy Star website, Energy Star certification covers the following:
• Color Quality
6 different requirements for color to ensure quality up front and over time
• Light Output
Light output minimums to ensure you get enough light
Light distribution requirements to ensure the light goes where you need it
Guidelines for equivalency claims to take the guess-work out of replacement
• Durability
Verified compliance with more than 20 separate industry standards and procedures
Long term testing to back up lifetime claims
Testing to stress the products in operating environments similar to how you will use the product in your home
3 year minimum warranty requirement
HEAT
During operation, LED bulbs should generate less total heat than equivalent incandescent bulbs or CFLs, but I could not confirm this. I did find the diffusion end of the bulb where the light emits from cool enough to touch and grasp without a problem. However, the relatively large area between the diffusion end and the screw base serves as a heat sink, and is too hot to grasp without skin protection.
CONCLUSION
The present pricing for these bulbs seems to be a bargain, especially considering the potential energy savings and their “instant on” attribute. But before replacing all your bulbs, there are a number of trade-offs to consider that are not addressed in the product description/specifications, particularly their lack of even light distribution and low CRI, as well as questionable seller claims regarding suitable applications and color (2700K). There are also some unknowns, including their potential for “lumen depreciation” (associated with LED technology), and their overall longevity.
As of this writing, all of the reviews for this particular product are less than 9 months old. Most of the glowing reviews, in addition to being posted immediately or shortly after purchase, simply indicate they all work and/or focus on the “bargain” pricing, anticipated energy savings, and/or their “instant on” attribute. The other issues overlooked or not addressed may or may not be deal-breakers for you, but at least you now have more information to make an informed decision.
